Mattiello’s career so far

A versatile wide player, he’s a good runner, selfless and comfortable with his right foot. He’s coming in from the first season when he was able to play consistently after he was an important figure in Semplici’s Spal side. Effective on the right or on the opposite flank, in a 3-5-2 formation he’s good at covering and breaking quickly, defending alertly with a good turn of pace that allows him to get to the line.

After being a promising tennis player at a young age, he committed to football and moved from Lucchese to Juventus in the summer of 2009. He was a key figure for the Bianconeri’s Primavera side that won the 2012-13 title.

Spotted by Antonio Conte and then Massimiliano Allegri as a full-back who could play in a back four, he made his Serie A debut in Autumn 2014 while on loan at Chievo but was set back by a double leg break that threw his development of course and ruled him out of Evani’s Under-20 Italian National Team where he had made four appearances.

In Ferrara, he moved to the left with Lazzari playing on the right and Serie A got to see more of his versatility and dynamism as a wide player with impressive physical and tactical attributes. He signed for Atalanta on a permanent basis but remained with Spal on loan until the end of the season. In July 2018, he joined Bologna on loan with the obligation that the deal is made permanent should certain conditions be met.
